On May 21, 2009, NUTRO® announced a voluntary recall of their NATURAL CHOICE®
COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Dry Cat Foods with "Best If Used By
Dates" between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being recalled
voluntarily in 11 countries, namely the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan,
Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel.
The reason for the recall is a production error by a US-based premix
supplier. Due to this production error, two mineral premixes were prepared with
incorrect levels of zinc and potassium. One of the premixes contained excessive
levels of zinc and was under-supplemented with potassium; the other premix was
under-supplemented with potassium. The problem was found when NUTRO® conducted
an audit of documentation from this supplier. Once the problem was identified,
NUTRO® followed up with an extensive review, and confirming that only these 2
premixes were involved, and that they were only used in the manufacture of dry
cat foods. The premixes were not used in the manufacture of any NUTRO® dog
foods, any canned cat foods, or any dog and cat treats.
Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue
feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced
nutritional profile. At this time, no problems have been identified in cats fed
these foods. The potential symptoms that could be seen in cats include a
reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea. If
your cat is experiencing health issues or is pregnant, please contact your
veterinarian.
